Motor Vehicle Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) projects that an estimated 42,795 people died in U.S. motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2022 — down 0.3% as compared to 42,939 fatalities reported for 2021. Americans are driving more than they did at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as people resume their work commutes and other activities.

However, these high numbers reflect a troubling national trend in recent years of increasing motor vehicle accident fatalities, after years of deadly crashes being on the decline.

The National Safety Council reports that motor vehicle accident deaths increased by 11% in 2021 following an 8.3% increase in 2020. In 2021, 46,980 people died in motor vehicle crashes nationally compared to 42,338 in 2020 and 39,107 in 2019.

NHTSA traffic crash data for 2020 revealed that in 45% of fatal crashes, passenger vehicle drivers engaged in at least one of the following risky behaviors: speeding, alcohol impairment, or not wearing a seat belt. These national trends are also reflected in fatal crash data for Maryland.
